Chapter 1406
Hertha’s round, doe–like eyes fixed on Georgia with a fiery glare, irritation ready to spill from her lips in a heated tirade.
But suddenly, Alaric extricated his arm from Georgia’s grasp, casting her an annoyed glance. “Georgia, cussing someone out as soon as you see them, is that what you’d call cultured? Don’t make me think you haven’t even finished elementary school!”
At Alaric’s words, the anger boiling inside Hertha simmered down to a mere half of its fury.
What was going on?
Was Alaric actually standing up for her?
Wasn’t Georgia his fiancée?
Three years prior, Alaric and Georgia’s engagement party had set the town of Starhaven abuzz, with every major media outlet clamoring to cover the event. The ceremony was both lavish and grand, and it lasted two days–much more extravagant than most engagement parties.
Hertha wanted nothing to do with news about Alaric, wishing to remain ignorant of his engagement to Georgia.
But television, social media, news alerts–everywhere she turned, the splendor of Alaric and Georgia’s engagement was broadcasted.
Even if there was a shred of longing left in Hertha for Alaric, it was thoroughly extinguished by the grandeur of that engagement party.
Three years after their engagement, Hertha didn’t know why Alaric and Georgia hadn’t wed, but she was certain they had been intimate.
She didn’t know how many times, but she was crystal clear about one instance–they had truly slept together.
If once they’d shared a bed, then surely there must have been more after their engagement.
Now, Alaric was not siding with his own fiancée‘ but defending her, an outsider.
This took Hertha by surprise.
The harsh words she had prepared for Georgia were swallowed back.
Georgia’s arm, once entwined with Alaric’s, was released into the air, and her heart followed suit.
Hearing Alaric’s reproach, she pouted in hurt, “She was the one being rude to you. I was just sticking up for you, Alaric. How can you
blame me?”
“She’s right. We should both mind our own business!” Alaric retorted, his gaze at Georgia laced with disdain.
From the moment his mother had tried to set him up with Georgia, Alaric had never taken a liking to her.
Three years ago, ending up in bed with Georgia was the result of his drunkenness–he had dreamed she was Hertha, only to wake up and find Georgia beside him.
It was a mistake that gnawed at him.
“Alaric! I’m your fiancée. It’s my right to care about you. What do you mean ‘minding my own business“? If you keep this up, I’ll have a word with my parents and pull their investment from the Falconer Group. Let’s see how you fare as Vice President then!”
Georgia’s chest heaved with anger as she spoke, her words a blatant threat.
She had been patient with Alaric up to a point, cooing and cuddling. But now, utterly disregarded and even targeted because of another woman, her highborn temper flared uncontrollably.
Georgia was no pushover. Raised in the lap of luxury, she was the precious darling of her household, coddled and adored.
She got everything she wanted. No one dared to scorn or reprimand her. Who was Alaric to reproach her over another woman?–
The one thing Georgia loathed the most was swallowing her pride.
Upon hearing her ultimatum, Alaric’s agitation showed as he yanked at his tie, his expression darkening. Pointing to the elevator, he challenged Georgia, “Go on then, tell your parents. Have them pull the plug on their investment. Tell them they needn’t prop up me, the good–for–nothing. Go ahead, now!”
